Why Sleepy Spell Changed How It Creates Stories (And Why Your Privacy Still Comes First)
When we first built Sleepy Spell, we made a promise that everything happened on your device. It was a promise we meant, and one a lot of you chose us for. So as we've grown and improved the app, we want to be open about something that's changed under the hood - and, just as importantly, about what hasn't.
Here's the honest version.
What changed
Sleepy Spell now uses a hybrid approach. When your child asks for a bedtime story, the app sends that request to our secure server, which helps generate the story, and it comes back to your device to be read and played.
Previously, the app tried to do all of this entirely on the phone itself.
Why we changed it
The short answer: on-device stories were holding back the magic.
Running everything on a phone put real limits on what we could offer. The variety of stories was narrow. The quality couldn't reach where we wanted it. And the experience varied wildly depending on how new or powerful a family's phone happened to be.
We built Sleepy Spell so that bedtime could be calmer and more wonderful - and to keep that promise, the stories themselves have to be genuinely good. Moving to a hybrid model lets us give your child richer, more varied, more delightful stories, night after night, on any phone. It's the difference between a small handful of tales and a world that keeps growing.
We didn't make this change lightly. We made it because it makes the thing your child actually experiences - the story - meaningfully better.
What did not change: your child's privacy
This is the part that matters most, so we want to be completely clear.
No child data is sent - just the story request. When the app asks our server for a story, it does not send your child's name, personal details, or identifying information. What goes to the server is just that - a request for a story - not a record of your child.
We are still built privacy-first. That was never a marketing line for us; it's a principle. Changing how we generate stories did not change our commitment to keeping your child's information private and protected.
If you ever want the full detail on exactly what is and isn't handled, our privacy policy lays it out plainly.
Why we're telling you this
We could have quietly updated the app and said nothing. We didn't want to do that.
You trusted us with something that matters - your child's bedtime, and your family's privacy. That trust is worth more to us than looking flawless. When something changes, especially something we'd previously talked about, you deserve to hear it from us, in plain language.
So: the stories got better. Your privacy stayed protected. And we'll always try to tell you the truth about how Sleepy Spell works.
Thank you for trusting us with bedtime.
